Spotlight on Jenny Hand
At Spotlight, we had the opportunity to speak to Jenny Hand, CEO of Reaching People, who told us about her determination to achieve equality, trust and build partnerships.
Reaching People is both a charity and a registered company. It is a unique partnership of local member charities and social businesses that share the same commitments and values. We created Reaching People because we want to work together and create lasting change that will benefit the people who are most in need of it.
Equality is incredibly important to me, and throughout my career, I have been a huge believer in the idea that achieving equality is not possible without collaboration and sharing. Which is why I am incredibly passionate about the fact that Reaching People is a true collaboration and was established collectively. This truly is my dream job and I’m so lucky that it brings together everything I have been passionate about throughout my career.
If I could give somebody starting out in their career one piece of advice, it would be to take notice of what you are doing, where you are going and what impact this has on others around you. One of the best parts of my job is seeing people thrive, learn and really grow into themselves, so it’s incredibly important that I reflect on what impact I’m having on them. In a world full of negativity, we should always aim to be positive, encouraging people and wanting to help others do well.
As well as this, I also think that it’s important for people to listen hard and be open to learning. It’s crucial that we listen to people and learn about what is going on in the world around us, as it’s the only way that we can truly achieve equality. One way that you can do this is to work or volunteer in a charity and always be prepared to give back. By doing this you will not only achieve enormous job satisfaction, but you will also be able to learn from others and their experiences.
Without listening to and learning from other people, Reaching People never would have happened, and there would be no future for us.
In fact, we’re currently planning to start a new local leadership project – Leading in Leicester and Leicestershire. This project plans to develop our framework of support to a wider range of local charities, community groups and social enterprises who all have something to offer our vibrant sector. Through this, we hope many more organisations will have a stronger voice and collaborate to create a more cohesive sector that reaches even more people in need, so it’s easy to see why it’s so important to listen and learn in our business.
