Spotlight on - Freddy Heppell

We put the spotlight on Freddy Heppell, Founder of Oink Odds. This is a must-read for anyone starting out in their career, struggling with motivation or young people thinking about starting a new career.

What has been your strategy for your business during corona?

Adapt and prepare. We’ve expanded the site to include new ways of making money online, whilst improving user onboarding, upgraded the website and developed a more detailed strategy for when things return to the ‘new normal’.

What top tips do you have for businesses struggling with remote working?

Take time to do the things that keep you sane. For me, this is exercising and catching up with my friends. Use time-boxing to clearly identify what you’re working on and when. This helps keep your productivity up when you’re more prone to getting distracted at home.

How has your business adapted to deal with such uncertain times?

Due to coronavirus, there has been very little sport on. This has meant the ‘normal’ way of matched betting has been much harder to do. Instead of sports offers, we’ve focused on utilising online casino sites which offer bonuses and free spins. This involved lots of new content being drafted up, along with continuous testing of the offers to write up the new guides.

A background into you and your business?

Back in 2016, one of my best mates told me about this betting thing he was doing and how he’d already made a couple of hundred pounds. Oh, and it didn’t matter who won the bets.

My curiosity was peaked, and I had to try it out for myself. Before I knew it, I was making about £500 a month whilst studying at uni and I’d managed to save up enough money to replace my broken phone, go on a couple of holidays, and stick a few grand into my savings.

Yet, even now, so many people haven’t heard of matched betting, or don’t have the tools to get started. That’s why I started Oink Odds, a free matched betting website that helps anyone over 18 make an extra avenue of income, and ultimately, making a difference to people’s lives.

What has been your biggest challenge or setback during your career?

My biggest challenge so far has been to get past the scepticism and stigmatism that surrounds online betting. Matched betting is completely legal but often seems too good to be true.

If any, can you tell us more about how you overcame those setbacks?

It’s an issue that won’t go away, but by being authentic and honest with my members it’s helped people understand that although matched betting isn’t a get rich quick scheme, it can make a massive positive impact on their lives.

What three tips would you give to those starting their careers?

  1. Ask for help. You can’t do everything (even if you want to) so getting advice from others really helps, especially if you’re thinking through ideas and feel like you have a million and one options.

  2. Be kind. This doesn’t mean be a pushover, it means adding value where you can but doing things for the right reason.

  3. Be authentic. Pretending to be someone you’re not can help you get up the ladder but at the expense of your authenticity. I think being yourself is really important as it’s what differentiates you from others.

What is your advice to people who are wanting to start a business?

Just get started. Sometimes it can be easy to be overwhelmed because there are so many options and you don’t know what to do first. By just getting started, whether that be by making a website, or taking on your first client you can actually make progress. You will deal with all the extras as you go.

Thanks so much to Freddy for chatting with us and giving some amazing advice. You can check out Oink Odds here.
