Spotlight on David Maran
At Spotlight, we had the opportunity to speak to David Maran, Managing Director of MP Digital, who told us about his passion for helping people.
As the founder and managing director of MP Digital, I’ve had the opportunity to work within many agencies across Leeds, Manchester, Derby and Nottingham. During this time I have worked with large blue-chip companies such as The FA, HSBC, Co-op, Warburtons, NHS and many others.
I set up MP Digital with the intention of setting up and running my own agency, but I found that this came two years earlier than I had originally planned. I wanted to create a company that enhances other companies and helps them to progress and become larger. This is a very easy thing to measure within the leisure industry as success online directly affects footfall in the centres.
Over the following three years, MP Digital has progressed into becoming specialists in booking systems, specifically in the leisure industry. Which has given me the opportunity to work with incredible companies such as; Clip ’n Climb, Angry Birds, Namco and many other smaller independent companies.
We found this progression, into a specialist organisation of leisure booking systems, very organic as it was one that stemmed from my own experiences. Having experience in development, user experience, project management and sales allowed MP Digital to take on projects that were larger than themselves, and we were able to do so while providing a fantastic service.
I’ve found that one of my greatest setbacks is managing expectations, specifically managing expectations of myself and my staff. We grew quickly and brought on very large clients so it’s essential that we remember to keep our feet planted, but unfortunately, sometimes this is very difficult to do, especially seeing how well the company has grown.
Which is perhaps why it’s very difficult to say that we have overcome these challenges, as it’s a battle every day. From the outside, we may look like a very successful business growing substantially and getting very large clients, but it’s only because we have created an excellent team of employees and management staff, that we’ve been able to achieve this. Planning is key to everything that we do, and it’s important that we think about what we will look in three months' time.
I also believe that the key to MP Digital’s success is our dedication to providing excellent customer services. We know that a product is never finished, which is why we work with our companies daily and weekly to advance and enhance their experience, as well as the experience of their customers.
What gives you the drive and determination to succeed?
Our clients give us the drive and determination to succeed. It may sound like a cliché but it’s true, I speak with most of our clients on a weekly basis. It’s great to know how they are doing and how things are with them, especially in the current COVID climate. From a personal perspective, I want to help people and encourage them to progress, whether that’s with the staff that we employ or the customers we get. Success all around will provide success for the business.
Advice for those starting their careers
My advice would be to focus on the things you can change and not the things you can’t. As a business owner, I always hear stories, news and information from a range of sources that could drive me into never wanting to get out of bed again. Taking this information, compartmentalising it and using it to drive you is incredibly important. You need to learn to take everything with a pinch of salt.
Most importantly, over the course of your career, you will find hundreds of contacts but you need to make sure that you keep these safe as they will become valuable assets when you launch your own business.
What does the future look like for your business?
The future looks interesting to us. I would be lying if I didn’t say it looked scary and exciting at the same time. We are planning to launch a booking system into the market in 2021 that takes what we have learnt over the past 3 years and puts it into a package that is more affordable for smaller independent leisure and hospitality companies. We believe it will balance the playing field between large and small leisure companies.
How has your business adapted to the Coronavirus pandemic?
We have tried to spread our client base across other countries to stop the UK’s restrictions and the spreading of COVID from affecting our business massively. I also think you need to be human, and remember that it’s difficult for everybody, especially regarding remote working. Which is why it’s important to trust your employees. They are the blood of the business and some may work weird times, some work longer hours but you need to support them with their role.
